Heart of the Groves

Walt Disney Imagineering's Imaginations Design Competition

Project Challenge:

Create an iconic installation on your campus or city that serves as an inspiration, honors the past, and is a vision of the future. It can be architectural, ornamental, static, active, whatever your team feels is the best way to represent your unique chosen location. It can be intimate or grandiose, but it should always be appropriate for the location selected. In telling the very unique story of your chosen spot, it should respect and integrate local traditions and geography. Your icon should be a place to gather and celebrate, as well as reflect and educate the community. A concept that will go down in history as symbolic of your campus or city.

Our Concept:

The weight of living in a hospital with your child is one of the heaviest you can carry. Parents are determined to make the white walls and cold floors of a hospital seem as comforting as possible for their child. However, there’s nothing harder than seeing your child in a hospital gown, especially when it comes to a defect of the heart. What would a parent say if they were told that it was possible for their child to go outside the hospital, play as a child, and interact with other children, all while being safe for their own health? What would you say as a parent if you were told that there was a network of other Heart Warriors, who were there for you and were willing to take care of your personal needs that you are setting aside for your child’s sake? Heart of the Groves is located in Blackburn Park, the very center of Webster Groves in St. Louis, Missouri, and a popular place for families to have their recreational time. The outdoor naturescape is designed specifically for patients and families, complete with medical care and a direct line to the hospital in case of emergencies. The playground is accessible for physical and occupational therapy sessions, so that therapists can take their patients on outings to work on their exercises in a new way. Here, as a child, you are able to bring out your free spirit and enjoy some outdoor wild activities. As a parent, you are able to take a break from the stressful hospital environment and see your child in their natural habitat, all with the comfort of knowing they’re safe. Friends quickly become family, supporting each other through the hardest time in their lives.
